The Scarlet Blossom on a Shirt
For Aida
1965
I carry stones on my shoulders
I shoulder stones
blocks of words
blocks of rhymes
and since sweat-shedding dusk,
who rouses the night
in its tenebrous chasm,
and when color is tarred
into coffin’s blindness
and song is left breathless in terror
of the imminent explosion
of silence,
I work,
I work,
work
and with blocks of words
I erect
walls
solid
where I rest the roof of my poetry
To settle in.
To be imprisoned within…
Thus am I: an imbecile, maybe.
Who knows
that I must carry on my shoulders
the blocks of my own prison
like Mary’s son his cross?
And not like you,
who carve the handle of that hateful whip
from your brother’s bone
weave the criminal braid of its lashes
with your sister’s hair
and ornament the hilts of tyrants’ swords
with your father’s broken teeth!
*
And I bear heavy blocks of rhyme on my shoulders
and in the prison of poetry
enclose myself
like a picture confined
to the prison of its frame.
Perchance a dull image of rawness:
an image of past years’ me,
lost,
who has my childlike look
in the eyes,
and the older me has left his smile on his lips
whom today I see
like a repentant does his sins!
An unlike image that,
if he forgot his smile,
if his cheeks were hollowed out
by the search for life,
if his forehead were furrowed
by the passage of enslaved ages,
would become me.
Would become exactly me.
Would become me, carrying on my shoulders
the stones of my own prison
in silence
and shutting up my soul’s efforts
within the four walls of words
whose silence explodes
in the void of song
and whose empty gaze scours
the wasteland of color...
Would become exactly me.
Would become me
having forgotten my smile—
and this my cheek,
this my forehead...
*
Thus am I
prisoner of the dulcet walls of tongueless words—
I have imprisoned my image
in its frame,
my name in my poetry,
my feet in the shackles of my beloved,
my tomorrow in my child’s self,
and I have put my heart in your hands
the hands of our collaboration
collaboration with you, who make
the soldiers of the firing squad,
—shuddering with cold
and folly frozen in their eyes—
drink your warm blood.
You who strive to break the walls of your present’s sepulcher
who tranquilly
rest on your elbow
the ivory urn of your skull,
and through the window of pain
taste the view of the future’s bright palace
on the palate
of your epic strife.
You...
and me...
You and me,
and not others who make
knives for their livers,
prisons for their bodies,
and rope for their necks.
Nor the others who feed
your executioner’s furnace
with wood from my garden
and bake my hangman’s bread
on the embers of your posterity.
*
And tomorrow, when I sink into the febrile, gory soil,
take my picture off the wall
of my house
—the imbecile image that,
in darkness and defeat,
laughs at chained hands—
and say to it:
Oh unlike image,
What were you laughing at?
and hang it anew,
but facing the wall.
And on I go
with and for you—
you whom I so love,
and in my future as in my past,
I go heavy-laden with stones:
blocks of words,
blocks of rhymes,
to build a prison of love
and shut myself in.
Love of men
and women
love of the flutes
dogs
and shepherds
love of the wait,
and the crystal percussion of the rain
on the window pane
love of factories
of clenched fists
and guns
love of the mule’s map,
the tropics of its ribs
the peaks of its pelvis
and the river of the whip
running red
love of your tear
on my cheek
and my delight
at your smile
love of tumbleweed
of urtica and wild thyme
and the green blood of chlorophyll
on the wounded leaf
love of the city’s maturation
and its love
love of the shade of summer’s wall
and arms folded
on the knees of idleness
love of the king’s cloak
when used to shine shoes
and the helmet
when used to wash rags
love of the rice paddies
the feet
and the leeches
love of dogs’ old age
and their begging eyes
the butcher’s doorstep
and the kick
and the distant shore
where hunger laps against a final bone
as they die of thirst
and the sunset
with its cinnabar clouds
and the smell of the herds
in the alleys of willow trees
love of the carpet-weaving studio
the quiet murmur of colors
the beating of woolen blood
in knotted veins
and the dear souls of fingers
constantly battered.
love of autumn
with its leaden sky
love of the ambling women
their homes
their loves
and their modesty
love of hatreds
knives
tomorrows
love of the hollow barrels
of thunder racing down
the cobble-stoned slope of the sky
and the salty smell of the harbor,
the flight of the ducks,
boat lanterns,
and the green crystal of the waves
with their fluorescent eyes
love of the harvest
of planted whispers
love of the cries reaped
love of the sheep’s carcass
that stays unbought
on the butcher’s hook
rots
decays
love of the fish’s gold
in the ceramic-tiled pond
love of haste
and lingering
love of people
who die
and melt
and in the dry, soulless soil
by groups
clusters
masses
sink
and sink
and sink
love of the silence and the whisper and the cry
love of the prison of poetry
with its heavy chains:
chains of words,
chains of rhymes.
*
And on I go,
taking my prison with me
—shackles on my feet,
impatience in my gaze,
and faith in my victory—
together,
on from the shoot of an imbecile smile
in a picture on yesterday’s wall,
until the scarlet blossom on a shirt
on the executioner’s pyre:
until tomorrow!
*
Thus am I:
dweller of the castle of prideful epics,
the insolent hoofbeats of wrath’s wild horse
on destiny’s cobblestoned path,
a word blowing
in the tempest of history’s great song,
a captive
in the prison of a revenge,
a glint
from the knife of spite
and the scarlet blossom on a shirt
by the path where today’s slaves
will pass tomorrow.
