Mystery House
I came to this house accidentally.
How long do I play hide and seek,
break the lying mirror,
and hate my shiny skin?
When I bind my bosom inside this silk dress,
my bones crush, and my heart breaks.
Sometimes I pinch myself to feel the pain.
I hear my heart beating,
I can taste my tears.
In this mystery house of rainbows,
fire and ice live as one.
I dream
of a baritone voice someday
and to stop the tears racing down my cheeks.
I dream
of a joyful day to come
when the hills will meet the valleys.
Then, with no fear of amma,
I will remove Ammu’s picture
and unveil Appu’s.
With permanent ink, I will sign the name Appu.
I dream
of a glorious morning to arrive
and to wake up to amma calling
in her honey-dipped voice
“Appu, Appu.”[1]
Reading a Woman
My dinner is secure tonight…
Do you know why?
I have high hopes for her poems…
I could smell fish in them
she won’t forget to make me fish for dinner,
this much I know.
Although she is choking in her binding bra
I am hopeful
those cat-eyed jugs are mine tonight.
She adorns her library with
Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf
But I am hopeful
she just started to roam for a room of her own.
I am hopeful
it will take another hundred years
before she becomes a “phenomenal woman.”
I am petrified
when she reaches for the sky and touches the rainbow,
You know why we are the ones
becoming Buddha, Christ, Yathi, or Osho.
Rightfully so, don’t you think?
So, woman,
I will read your racy words
and hug them for now.
Freedom
Some poets say,
Flying is freedom
Not walking.
So, I tried
To be a bird,
a black Beatle, or maybe a cloud.
At last,
I went on an airplane, silver-winged,
air-conditioned inside, windows closed,
seatbelt tied, I sat not moving,
I flew higher than birds, vultures, and clouds
but… where is freedom?
When I landed
I saw
the harvest-ready paddy fields
were still there.
Then,
a few birds, rice spikes on their beaks,
flew over me.
Change of Color
Eyes closed, I meditated all day
praying for nightfall.
When it arrived,
I drank the black until I bloomed.
A white Nishagandhi[2]was born.
Moonlight, till then disgusted
and kept away from me,
came hugging and kissing.
She even made a birth certificate for me.
Our caste was the same in it!
When Grief Becomes a Poem
Sorrow is a plant.
Life blooms on its branches,
smelling like a lost paradise.
The mad woman sitting
at the banks of Ganges River
smells the same.
It only blossoms
when language has no limits,
love and loss are mixed in equal parts.
Only then does it smell the same,
a rare scent!
