1. A Raven, A Moon
Your heart leaps up
when you behold*
the end of the port
doesn’t the Aegean Sea fathom souls?
a raven landed on my table
to peck at my pistachios
and taste my wine
then gave me a quick, reproachful look
departing to his nearby palm tree
since I had ignored, from my balcony
the sultry glance
of a woman passing by.
My friend, Izmir
what would you have done
with a half-moon, orange and drunk?
should we cast it behind the ferryboat
or hang it up on the palm beside my balcony
to spotlight the raven’s nest?
or skip it on the surface of the water
to guide a stranger roaming the coast
seeking his beloved?
or puncture it, until it sinks on the bed of the sea
it might get caught
by one of these two fishermen’s hooks
grappling solo, with the rain
late at night
under a couple of umbrellas?

2. A Meandering Orb
what shall we do with the red orb of the sun
sliding behind the sea
hail, then, to those who made homes out of mountains
they would see where it descends
the Gypsy rose-seller
gazed at it as well
and burst, out of the blue, into a melancholy song
the stranger seeking his beloved
stood between two palm trees below the hotel
to contemplate the fall of the orb
laughing hysterically
two roving violinists
caught two British tourists
near the harbor
and emptied their pockets
the coastal dogs howled
steering their heads toward the sky
two lovers in a seaside restaurant
clinked glasses
to the promise of a furtive night
two full-bosomed women of the same height
agreed that the orb
is merely a gratuitous moment of happiness
as for you, my friend
you bohemian poet
you still sit on your balcony
between the two palm trees
facing the water
and there comes the sea to absorb you
to draw the best out of you
and drain your soot into a side pipe
where even ravens would not perch
any given day!

3. When the Sea Occupies You
and the sea penetrates your pores
you sweat in beads of salt
yesterday you shed a red scorpion fish
grieving over your sliced orange moon
swallowed by one of the ferryboats
then the city teemed inside your body
you disgorged a few beauties
sashaying along the coast
in skimpy shorts
you belched roaming musicians
tossing a ball around between sets
leaning their instruments
against the wall of your exhausted lung
as for the mussel-sellers
chased by the municipality
they blew safely out of your nostrils
with the smoke of tobacco
the Sisim Meyhane tavern
gurgled in your throat
until you spat it out
as clamor, music
and frutti de mare
my friend
do not resist the sea when it invades you
I know someone who tried to resist
the occupation of the sea
searching for an alleged independence
then ended up depressed and drowned
so float with me on the surface of the water
to wave from afar
to the one seeking his beloved
when he met her between the two palm trees
and kissed her below the hotel
she glanced above
and the bohemian poet on the balcony smiled at her
and she smiled back
while the red orb of the sun
had already disappeared behind the mountains

4. Smothered Moon
oh my, oh my, ho ho!
where did the moon go?
behind the black clouds
or did you not know?
thus, sang us the gypsy
for a pair of liras
and that night
waxing lyrical
we almost jumped into the sea,
a smothered moon
for which the farmers in my country
kept beating the drums, banging the pots
until it glowed
is it so, you Aegean Sea,
that your moon vanishes,
smothered,
behind a black cloud?

Sisim Meyhane»
