Charles Baudelaire, born in Paris in 1821, was a French poet and essayist who remains one of the giants of French literature. His prose poems, published posthumously in 1869 in a collection called Petits poèmes en prose or Spleen de Paris, were a radically new form at the time of publication. They retain the power to shock and disturb even today.
