Mirza Asadullah Khan—nom de plume "Ghalib"—was born in Agra in 1797 and died in Delhi in 1869, a little more than a decade after his beloved city's brutalization by the British. He wrote in Urdu and Farsi, and is widely considered to be one of the most important innovators in the ghazal form.
