The Lokanit (“Guide to the World”) is in reality a Lokanit. A number of paremiologies (collections of proverbs and other maxims) bearing the same title exist in Burmese literature—products of a shared tradition of Theravadin Buddhist learning—and there are several Thai versions of uncertain dating as well. In the mid-nineteenth century, Somdet Phrachao Borommawongse-ther Krom Phraya Dechadisorn, called Prince Dechadisorn, of the Siamese court revised and assembled from these latter sources the standard Thai recension of the Lokanit, from which the following selection was chosen.
