Whether the anonymous author of “Against the Water-Elf-Disease” was an early-medieval English speaker or group of speakers passing down folk wisdom is virtually unknowable with the extant evidence. All that can be surely said is that a monk or cleric scribe wrote it down in the tenth century. "Against the Water-Elf-Disease" is preserved in the Læceboc (Royal Manuscript 12D.xvii, British Museum).
