About Editor Fujiwara no Teika

Fujiwara no Teika (1162-1241) was a leading Japanese literary figure in his time. He was not only a significant poet, but an acknowledged expert on literature and language. He was the first editor to work on two of the twenty-one imperial poetry collections commissioned between c. 770 and c. 1439. His influence was so great that his descendants continued to be considered authorities, based in part on their possession of his manuscripts.
