About Anonymous

Anonymous was an early-medieval to high-medieval Old Norse speaker or group of speakers. With extant evidence, it is virtually unknowable whether Anonymous was an individual or a community that passed down stories of earlier heroes, ending with a scribe of the celebrated Codex Regius in the thirteenth century. Anonymous's work is a retelling of the story of a Scandinavian hero, Helgi Hundingsbane, who was part of the Volsung line. The stories about the Volsungs are told in Codex Regius and Volsunga Saga and were made famous most especially in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. The selection of Anonymous's work I've compiled here has been considered some of the superior poetry in the Old Norse corpus.
