To the Reader

I began writing this diary, made of old memories, pages written over the course of my life, and thoughts from what I’m afraid may be my last days, imagining that someday someone would read them. Then I asked myself who would be interested in the memories of an old schoolteacher like me. Nobody; so what’s the sense in doing it? Perhaps someone will find it and put it into the big box of things to throw away when they empty out the houses of the deceased, with the haste of having to deal with an annoyance, as dead people often are. Or they might open it the way we open old school notebooks, laughing at the bad handwriting. In that case, it will end up in a basement along with the useless objects our heart won’t let us throw away. It will turn moldy and yellow. Some hairy insect will make a nest in it; termites will eat a few pages. Just the same, it’s nice to think that a part of me, even in that way, will remain alive. Knowing that in a hundred years someone could find it and wonder who this woman was and why she was so bound to her work makes me walk peacefully toward death. I see death down there at the end, all black, beckoning me, saying, “come, come.” It sits astride my thoughts, so I have to do something. I can’t go away leaving nothing.

So I dedicate this diary to you too, reader; to nobody. I hope you’re able to understand why I decided to write it. Most of all, I hope you find me in it.

Yours,

Rosalba

The sound of the bell

I always liked arriving a little bit before lessons began in the morning. The school was almost always empty; only the janitors, Mimmo and Franca, a married couple, were moving in the hallways. I took advantage of that desert to enjoy a little peace and prepare my notes in the teachers’ lounge. There used to be a big white beech bookcase in there, before they took it out to make way for computers. Walking by, you could read the spines: Antonio Gramsci, Benedetto Croce, my beloved Giambattista Vico—in truth I’ve read little of his work, but it always gave me a great feeling of harmony. Rooms filled with books make my mind drunk, and there’s really no need to read all of them. The odor of paper is one of the most beautiful things in life, in my opinion. Sometimes it reminds me of the smell of wheat in the Apennines in July, when my grandpa took me with him for the harvest and I made snow angels in the grain.

Every so often, if Mimmo had to sweep the teacher’s lounge (with the same broom he would brandish to calm down the students, made from dogwood branches), I would take walks through the classrooms, sitting at the empty desks, reading the names of foreign cities on the maps. I couldn’t have imagined a better place to spend one’s life than a school. I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere but there. Even if knew only too well that my paradise would vanish at the sound of the bell.

Silence and children

Being a teacher is a job that wears you out, in part because of the constant noise the children subject teachers to. The days pass immersed in a perennial low roar interrupted by explosions of screaming, weeping, or laughter, usually at an insane volume. It almost seems as though children’s uvulas were designed to emit annoying signals like car alarms. Among each other, children have no fear of this special trait; on the contrary, they take turns, and if one starts squealing the others follow in a domino effect that is not beneficial to the nervous system.

Some days, the noise produced by the children is so extreme that even I, who don’t suffer from headaches, felt like my head would explode. On the way home, I felt like I’d spent the entire day locked in a dog pound. I couldn't even make out faces anymore; it all seemed like one amorphous mass rolling through the classrooms, the hallways, the staircases, vomiting cries and clamor. Once I made it home, luckily I could count on several hours of silence. At the end of difficult days, I would beg Franco not to talk until at least nine in the evening. I would stroke his cheek to make him understand I wasn’t angry at him. We went on that way lovingly and in concord until the day of his death.

Love in the time of mononucleosis

Love is something I’m not sure children understand. They know of its existence because someone has told them about it, but they know it only secondhand. It’s impossible to say whether they are aware of the enormity of love. Children are deceptive about this, since they often hug you, give you kisses, sometimes say, “I love you”, but they seem either opportunistic or empty demonstrations of affection, like the way cats rub up against their masters, who respond by giving them food. I could be wrong, but after a good number of years in this profession, this is the idea I have formed. Of course, it’s nice to see a child gaze up at you with big eyes as he clings to your leg, but you mustn’t let yourself fall for these gestures. Children are sly as cats and know they have you in the palm of their hand!

About love, I was saying. Children often demonstrate love to one another to imitate grownups. They see adults giving each other kisses or dancing or having a beer together and they want to do it too. They want to be grown up before their time, and love is a free pass to the life of grownups. During a class party, a colleague of mine poured out Coca-Cola, passing it off as wine, and lemon soda as grappa: the children went home and told their parents that their schoolteacher had filled their cups with alcohol, and of course it triggered a huge brouhaha. But the children really appreciated the gesture because it made them feel grown up. It’s like when certain of my fifth-grade boys insinuate themselves with the girls to steal kisses. One in particular wasn’t able to get as close as he wanted to the little girls’ mouths, so he would spit in their faces, and this caused a small epidemic of mononucleosis in class. It was quite difficult to dissuade the boy of the nasty habit he’d acquired. Correcting a child’s bad habits is often as impossible as straightening a dog’s leg.

The little lies of children

November 18, 1989

This morning I was in the teacher’s room reading Bevilacqua’s Scandalous Youth, being careful not to attract too much attention since books like that don’t make the best impression around here. But every so often I like to grant myself a bit of euphoria, since most of life is constant boredom. What happened was that the mother of Lorenzo, one of my students, shows up all excited and asks to see me. She tells me I have to stop taking her son’s snack, that I have to explain why I did it, and give back what I took from him. I try to tell her it’s not true, I would never even think of such a thing—have we gone mad?—and I’m sincerely sorry for the embarrassing misunderstanding. In response she started raising her voice and the other two teachers in the room heard it all and started confabulating among themselves. What an ugly scene. So I had Lorenzo called in to clarify the matter, and when he came he first tried to hide under his mother’s overcoat, then started crying, and his mother said, “Now look what you’ve done. Is this how you treat children? Perhaps I should speak to the principal.”

I still don’t understand what happened, and I swear I didn’t take away his snacks. I felt so impotent standing there in front of them. Franco told me not to worry about it, that children do those things every so often; they tell little lies. I know they do, but it’s not fair that everybody only thinks about the children, while they’re all looking at me like a thief.

The dead woman’s house

One day when I went out to buy milk, I witnessed a truly ugly scene. I was outside Adriana’s house, the grocer’s niece who lives over the shop; I don’t know if you know it. The week before, Adriana had lost her daughter, who was only twenty-two and worked downstairs in the store with her grandparents. They say she was coming back from her fiancé’s town, Castel di Sangro, and her car went off the road. The local newspaper reported that a man had fallen asleep at the wheel, and to avoid him on a curve she ran into a pole and died on the spot. Adriana hadn’t left her house since it happened and the store stayed closed for days. As I was crossing the street to go back home, a group of children came by; some of them were from my school. As soon as they got under Adriana’s balcony, they stopped and began saying, “This is the dead woman’s house.” Then one of them yelled, “Mamma, I’m on my way home, I’m almost there, mamma!” and made an accelerating car sound with his mouth, and then the sound of the crash. The others burst out laughing till you thought they’d split, and pretended to crash into each other like bumper cars. I was horrified, and cried for a long time on my sofa. How can someone be so vicious? How can you insult the memory of a dead person? What kind of children behave that way?

Disrespect

June 3, 1991

One of the hardest things with schoolchildren is placating their resentment toward others. People always say they have a short memory, and that’s true; at the slightest distraction they forget what they were doing and don’t think about it anymore. Maybe they’re drawing a horse, then they see a toy pistol, so they start shooting, and if you ask them if they’ve finished their drawing, they look at you like they don’t know what you’re talking about. A little bit like kittens who wander around the house playing with whatever they happen upon. They do a thousand things per second without remembering even one of them. Only two things they never forget: promises received and insults borne. Especially the latter stick in their heads like a nail, a woodworm, a fixation. How many times have I tried to pacify them with a joke, a smile, or, in the most exasperating cases, by moving their seat? But there’s little you can do. If a child has suffered “disrespect,” as they say in some Al Pacino movies, nothing can stop them until they’ve taken revenge. . . But this behavior has always astounded me, and I have found it so innate and insistent only in three categories of people: people who get in fistfights; the mafia, especially from Naples; and children.

An unexpected coincidence, don’t you think?

Children are vindictive

Rereading these notes, sometimes it seems I’m exaggerating. But consider this: I have spent my entire life with children, this has been my profession, and my goal has been to educate them. My relationship with them is like that between doctors and patients. At a certain point I had to develop a patina of cynicism and extraneity, otherwise I wouldn’t have survived. In sum, I should not have let myself be dragged along by events or emotions. I and all the other teachers had to calm our nerves and not behave instinctually And yes, sometimes we were tempted to slap someone! But that’s just it, they were temptations that arose in a wave of stress, actions that a cooler mind would have considered—as we do consider them—unacceptable. Still, however, a slap or two from time to time might have let us let off some steam quite nicely.

There were some children who, as Franco said, make your hands itch. The worst were the vindictive ones, who never forgave you for having called them out in class or criticized them publicly for poor work. These pupils belonged to two precise categories: the spoiled and the future delinquents. These categories could sometimes overlap, and in general these factors were decisive in shaping the conduct of the vindictive child, one who wants to force respect from his playmates and can’t tolerate when the teacher shames him in front of others. I remember children who, when given a failing grade in dictation, would put a tack on my chair the next day, or hide my overcoat during recreation, or put breadcrumbs in my purse to attract ants. Not knowing exactly who was the guilty party, the only thing I could do in those cases was report the whole class to the principal’s office. I don’t like doing that, and think that children really don’t care when they get reported anyway, except for a few, but sometimes it‘s the only thing you can do. This sowed discontent in the whole class and the word spread among the desks that teacher was mean and unfair. But normally children, even when they know who’s responsible for their punishment, will not denounce the guilty party. In these cases they stick together against the adults.

Children are abysses

In an old datebook I found a sentence written at least thirty years ago, but I couldn’t say exactly when:

March 15 -

Children are abysses; if you touch them you fall in.

Children rule the world

December 5, 1971

Children are low but they watch us from on high: their gaze leaves no doubt. They judge us, they scrutinize us. They think they’re the cleverest. They think they possess the key to understanding the world. But if everything goes smoothly for children, it’s not because of some intrinsic quality of their own; it’s because they are diabolical creatures to whom everything is permitted. Adults lose their compass before children; they give in to things they’d never accept among themselves! It’s up to us schoolteachers to inculcate a few rules, to make them understand the world. But children flee from the world. It disgusts them. Children come into the world and then take over. This is the idea I’ve formulated.

What use are children?

I need to reflect on something buzzing like a nasty horsefly in my head for some days now.

Everyone I have met after turning forty has been shocked by the fact that I have no children. Not a single one has failed to ask me, “Why not?”, “Was it your own choice?”, “You still have time for at least one, why not try?” It’s as though my choice were strange, an embarrassing error I should hurry to put right. At a certain point you must produce a child; that’s how everyone thinks. Apparently it’s on the list of things to be done between the day you're born and the day you die. Like getting married, buying a house, traveling. For many people, living means having to do these things, and once done, they’re content.

There’s nothing wrong with that; that’s not what I mean to say. It’s nice to feel happy, even though in the end we realize this kind of happiness has the value of coinage no longer in circulation. But among these few things, which end up occupying a whole life, the urgency of bringing a child into the world has always been the one I least understand.

It seems, in fact, that in the last few years this thing of having children has become an affectation, a fad, a formality. The meaning of their presence in the world has gotten lost. What use are babies? Who can answer this question? Once an algebra teacher told me, “To continue the species, to permit humanity to go on living. If people stopped procreating, in the course of a couple of centuries, the Earth would be totally uninhabited.”

And yet this morning, when I happened to find myself alone for a moment, wetting my lips with a drop of herbal liqueur I’d been given as a gift, I came across an article in the local newspaper with somewhat different ideas. The title said, “Overpopulation: Why There Are Too Many of Us On This Planet.” There were a lot of numbers, to the point that you got scared looking at them. According to what it said, within a couple of decades there will be so many of us on the Earth that all the resources will be used up. Old people—lucky for me—will die off later and later, but it is particularly the newly born who are the problem.

So something is not clear to me. Do children serve to continue the species or extinguish it? These scientists never let you understand.

The fact remains that my answer, thinking of the times we’re living in, is that in themselves they are no use at all.

I am an only child. My mother gave birth to me to help her sew. That’s why I came into the world: to work with our family. I can swear on my mother’s grave, that’s what she told me. It’s a horrible vision of life; I think so, too. Fortunately, today this madness has come to an end almost everywhere, at least in our parts. But if you really think about it, it was a noble way of thinking about a child. He or she was immediately recognized as having a purpose, a task, a function. I can say that I came here because there was a need for me. It was important I be there for the life of my family. Without me they might not have made it on their own as far as money was concerned. But nowadays no one brings children into the world as though they were hiring laborers. There is no indispensable reason to have one except that we want to make the decision. Even perpetuating the species, which may seem sensible, is a foolish motivation. What man decides to get a woman pregnant to guarantee the future of humanity? Give me a break. We know that men have quite other things whirring in their heads.

So these children, conceived without a specific reason except to check off a list of important things to do in life, are born like mollusks attached to a rock, adapt to any surface, and suck up everything in front of them. They absorb everything that happens around them. They have the extraordinary destiny of being able to become what they want.

He who has no purpose, in fact, is free from everything.

Because of this, as they teach in religion class, the human beings preferred by all the gods are children. It must be because their existence is so unburdened by objectives and preoccupations that it resembles death.

A terrible trick

As my poor old father got older, his arteriosclerosis worsened and he became stupid. It made me feel so tenderly to think of him still young, in his oil-stained t-shirt as he repaired machines in the yard behind our house. He was always a silent man and wondered what made people chatter so much. As a child I didn’t like seeing him that way, I thought he was so sad. With time, though, I learned to appreciate his fugitive quality; I think it made him a great man.

Paradoxically, he spoke more as an old man than ever before, but it was hard to make out what he was saying. His face became softer, his eyes often fixed on the void, sparkling with a vague wonder I’d never seen in him before. Unfortunately, his dazed state made him an easy target for children, who can’t resist mocking people they find “strange.” When he was alone, they would play every sort of trick on him; some would pretend to be his grandchildren to get him to hand over a few pennies, or would ask him nonsensical questions like in movies by Monicelli, and then laugh at what he said. One evening, when after ten days at home I thought I’d take him out to get something to eat at the chestnut harvest festival, a boy really went too far. While I went to get him some chestnut purée and he was sitting down to hold our seats, this child pulled his chair away from behind, and he fell on his bottom. Luckily he wasn’t hurt except for a bruise or two— there was high grass which the town never cut, and it softened the blow. But if he had fallen badly he could have broken a bone or even cracked his skull. I almost had a heart attack, so I yelled at the child; it seemed the least I could do, considering what he’d done. So then his mother raises her voice against me, making me blush in front of everyone I knew, saying it wasn’t my job to discipline the boy and he was only a child and hadn’t done it on purpose. But once I got home I thought, for god’s sake, that stupid joke he made almost killed my father. Am I really not allowed to get angry?

The teacher is a boatman

Knowing how to live with children is not a gift, not a vocation. It is an achievement. Good and bad children do not exist, but good teachers do, as well as those who haven't understood anything about their job. They’re all wrong, those who subject children to teaching and discipline because that’s the only way to get anything into their heads. Children are not to be crammed to the brim with notions, mathematics, verbs, unknown capitals. They are to be guided safely to the end of the marvelous but also extremely violent adventure that is childhood. Without us, they’d never make it—heir imaginations and lunatic spirit would kill them off young.

A teacher is a boatman who leads children to safety on the opposite shore.

The Gift of Death

April 5, 1998

Many years ago, when my husband asked me for a child, I had a thousand thoughts. Among those thousand, one was, “Isn’t it cruel to bring someone into the world who is condemned to die? To force another being to live the moment of death, to experience in his own skin the split second of passing.” Worse, to live that way, as I sometimes do, as everyone does sometimes, with this torment in my heart, with this flat, little, disconsolate voice saying, “I have to die too, me too. . .”

When people bring a child into the world they think they’ve given an immense gift in granting someone the miracle of life. In reality, they have constrained the person to face the most terrifying enemy of all, the worst possible fate.

They’ve given them the gift of death.

L’amore, dicevo.

5 dicembre 1971

A cosa servono i bambini?

A cosa servono i bambini?

Translator's Note

There was nothing particularly difficult about translating this haunting and strangely beautiful little work, which is at least as much a found object as a piece of literature. The language is extremely plain; the sentences unusually short for Italian; the concepts simple, elementary. Put together, these unremarkable elements provide a delicate but deep glimpse into a soul that could be anyone’s, and like anyone’s, is unlike any other.
