Martial (Marcus Valerius Martialis, c. 40-104 CE) came to Rome as a young man from what is now northern Spain and won renown throughout the Roman empire for his humorous and satirical epigrams about daily life, which were published in fifteen volumes over his lifetime. His satires, often bawdy, use invented names when satirizing living people.
