The Swiss writer Robert Walser (1878–1956) is now recognized as one of the great voices of German-language literature. All four of his surviving novels—Jakob von Gunten, The Assistant, The Tanners, and The Robber—as well as numerous volumes of his poems, stories, and hallmark “prose pieces” have been translated into English.
