The Russian Symbolist poet Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Blok was born in St. Petersburg in 1880. He became famous for his cycle Стихи о Прекрасной Даме
[Stikhi o Prekrasnoi Dame – Verses about the Beautiful Lady], dedicated to his wife, Lyubov Mendeleevna. His later work was more political, notably Двенадцать [Dvenadtsat – The Twelve]. By the time of his death in 1921 he had become disillusioned with the revolution and had written no poetry for three years.
